Mock Trial: Ep. 1
Mock Trial
So, basically, I suck and forgot to upload the past couple weeks... And I have lots of works in progress, but this one feels significantly more important than the others.
For those of you who don't know what Mock Trial is, essentially it is club where the members simulate a real courtroom setting by taking on roles like lawyers and witnesses, presenting arguments and evidence in a hypothetical legal case, allowing them to learn about the legal process without any real legal consequences; often used in schools as a way to teach students about the law and courtroom procedures.
I had the opportunity to work with my amazing team this weekend in Downtown, Boise. We absolutely kicked butt thanks to literally everyone, but especially our witnesses who made it all possible (Khaleb Mendez, Anna Espinosa, Traea Teeter, Sara Grace, and Leah Meyer). Without all 5 of you, our team would be in shambles.
Another special thanks to Elaina Winn and Anjali Sandil (our prosecution attorneys) who competed back to back and absolutely crushed it. Elaina won an award for star attorney, but they both seriously kicked butt and I'd be lying if I said that Henri and I could have done it without them.
Speaking of Henri, he was my partner in crime, and has been for the last couple months while we worked through the whole case. He has been incredibly patient with me and all my crap, and I could never ask for a better person as my partner.
During our first (and only) round, there was a lot of things we ran into that was unexpected, but somehow our little defense survived and thrived. Khaleb, who played our defendant, absolutely rocked during cross, even though it wasn't something we had thoroughly prepared him for. Sara Grace played into her detective role just perfectly, winning a star witness award. And Anna did a great job during direct, adding in little details that Henri and I hadn't even considered.
There were a couple of scenarios I definitely wasn't prepared for, but thankfully Henri was able to recoup and patch up my mistakes all while killing it with his cross-questions and closing.
Over all, I think this tournament a complete success, and an absolute blast that allowed the opportunity to create new memories all while learning valuable lessons with my favorite group of people ever. But, we did qualify for state, which means hopefully you'll be seeing another successful post in two weeks! Stay tuned!!
